Artwork Description
This page was torn out of book, and a section of the page mechanically cut out. Edges of the paper had undergone general aging, with pink mold spots and brown fox marks. It had insects and their droppings visible under microscope.
Before Restoration
The verso and recto displayed general aged and the corners were fragile and ready to fall apart. Our decision was to remove surface dirt, followed by humidification, oxidation, alkanization, oxidation, and re-sizing before re-touching, and finishing
After Restoration
The front of the page was whitened, the loose fragments of the right hand corner secured onto matching Japanese tissue paper. The integrity of the paper edges was maintained.
The South African Institute for Objects Conservation was satisfied with the skills aquired by the chief artist to restore this page.
